A Chef's Table at Wakame

There's something special about when a chef cares about your opinion on their food. Now, imagine how it feels when six different chefs care about your opinion in one lunch. That’s how special I felt when I was at Wakame.

Wakame is one of the restaurants at the Lagos Marriot Hotel in Ikeja. They serve a variety of Asian cuisines. It’s like a tour of Asia but in restaurant form. Immediately I walked into Wakame, the space screamed sophistication, class, and most importantly, enjoyment. The first thing I saw from the corner of my eye was a proper open kitchen and I found it very interesting.

I was invited to a round table by Wakame before it launched I had the opportunity to sample the menu before they officially launched.

[Ed. Note: They’ve launched now so maybe we’re dated lol]

We all sat and chatted away before they bombarded us with lots of food. Emphasis on the "lots". We did the cold plates first, then salads and the lot. I remember absolutely loving the Somtum Salad with Peanuts. I did not expect myself to dive in the way I did but it was really good. I also tried out the Chiang Beef Salad and that was decent as well.

Some of the plates that really stood out and will make me go back to Wakame were the Chicken Tikka Biryani, the Spring Rolls (God, it was sooo good), Naan and the Curry. The curry, in particular, was divine!

Then, there was the lemongrass ice cream. I have never had anything like this before. It this tangy lemongrass after taste that I can not just explain why I like.

Oh wait, how I can forget the tandoori wings? It was not your typical barbecue or peppered chicken wings at the typical Lagos restaurant. The spices just hit different and the infusion of fresh veggies took it to another level.

When I actually visit, the Jera Rice with Kebab is the one thing I’m ordering when I come back to Wakame as a civilian. Talk about the flavor! It had a poached egg on it and I quite liked the twist.

The only meal out of the whole spread that I wasn't fascinated by was the steak and this is because it was well done which to me is not how steak should be eaten. Don’t come for me, but you know I’m right.

I absolutely loved everything about Wakame, the lovely staff, the chic space and great food. They definitely understand the assignment. I’ll need to visit and do a proper review soon.
