For the Love of Food: 10 Questions with Karo Omu 🌮

In this all-new series, we’re catching up with your faves in the media, entertainment and pop culture scene to ask hard-hitting questions and discuss pressing world issues — like where to find the best suya on the Island, or whether or not fish pie should *really* be a thing, y’know?

Today, we chat with the founder of The Sanitary Aid Initiative, social advocate and one of the funniest people you can have on your Twitter TL, Karo Omu.

Enjoy!

EatDrinkLagos: The last thing you ate?

Karo: 🤔 Amala and ewedu.

EatDrinkLagos: Your least favourite Nigerian meal?

Karo: Listen, you guys, I wouldn’t touch gbegiri with a barge pole.

EatDrinkLagos: The last time you went on a dinner date?

Karo: I haven’t done dinner in a while, but I went on a lunch date for Mother’s Day and it was really nice.

EatDrinkLagos: Your funniest experience with a restaurant server?

Karo: Lol, hmmm… I can’t think of any right now, actually.

EatDrinkLagos: Eating indoors or outdoors?

Karo: I like the outdoors when the weather is good, but I'm always tempted to eat inside when the ambience is nice.

EatDrinkLagos: The weirdest flavour of ice cream you’ve ever had?

Karo: Mint. Sounds basic, but mint ice cream should not exist.

EatDrinkLagos: Trivia — which city in Germany gives its name to one of the USA’s favourite foods? (No googling!)

Karo: Hamburg? I promise, I didn’t Google! I hope I'm right. (The correct answer is Hamburg.)

EatDrinkLagos: Trivia — what food group does the peanut belong to? (No googling!)

Karo: Peanuts are legumes. Silly, but I only know this because I have a toddler. I would have said they were seeds if you asked me like 5 months ago 😆 (The correct answer is legumes.)

EatDrinkLagos: You have to go without one of these for a year — pepper or sugar. What will it be?

Karo: COMMON, I can’t pick between pepper and sugar. Actually, maybe I’d go without sugar because pepper is so important in my food, but, on second thought, sugar is just as important to keep me going. I'm a low-iron babe, so I need sugar. Thankfully, I don’t have to pick; I’m not picking, this is not real life! 😅😅

EatDrinkLagos: Something that would have to be on the menu if you owned a restaurant?

Karo: Okro soup and fried yam. Not together o, but yeah, Okro soup and eba! And then fried yam and turkey.
