Were These Truly 2022’s Worst Drink Trends? We Asked, You Answered

What better time than the New Year to discuss everything we hated about the last one? Here’s my personal list of no-no 2022 trends — across the board:

  1. Icky, overly sales-y influencer content 🚫

  2. Crocs and socks (I’m actually sorry about this one)

  3. The word “giving” 🚫

There were also a lot of food and drink trends that really pissed us off last year (as you’ll see below). We threw the question out to you folks on social, and y’all — understandably — had A LOT to say. That led to the compilation of this list of your responses — and thereafter, the birth of a kind of movement to fight the system as a collective, and kiss these drink trends goodbye. For good.

the overpriced cocktail

This was, by far, the biggest drink trend in Lagos you guys wanted gone.

@feyikemi_: Charging more than 2,500 for Chapman. Pleaseee, let's be serious

@SogieSnuggle: Let’s go back to 3500/4500 cocktails please. Put a stop to 6k-9k drinks

@Ellsx__: Why are shots more that 3500?? I feel sorry for people partaking in that fr

@pejubabyy: idk why milkshake costs more than 3500 but it needs to stop. is it more than ice cream milk and extras????

@_Ayooluwa: Let’s have back 3,500 drinks pls .. and you see that Long Island ? Not in 2023

@SimiOtsu: Long Island should kindly disappear from Lagos bars, lounges, restaurants, everywhere. Then overpriced cocktails that come in small glasses. Am I paying for an experience or the drink? Lol

@Orunmumipe: Make mocktails cheaper. There's no reason I'm paying ₦3k5 for what's essentially Schweppes

@WasOnceJefe: Pouring nonsense brands behind the bar and charging premium cocktail prices.

Bartenders, please go to bartending school or something because y’all be making ice and water and calling it cocktail. Stop it.

THE LACK OF variety, BARTENDER SKILLS & WEIRD COMBINATIONS

The general consensus is that restaurant owners and bartenders need to do (wayyy) better

@shivamLM: Stop mixing beer and tequila. Say no to Desperados.

@pejubabyy: Bartenders. please go to bartending school or something because y’all be making Ice and water and calling it cocktail. stop it.

@aunty_tp: Incompetent “mixologists”

@omowo: Strawberry Daiquiri with no fresh strawberries

@senor_hachi: Cocktails that taste like fruit juice. If I wanted a mocktail, I'd have ordered one. Don't be shy, put some more liquor in it.

@annieudofia: Random combinations in the name of cocktails

@awelagos: We need more alcohol-free beverages that are sophisticated enough

@ekeneenwezoh: Restaurants calling drinks cocktails but no alcohol and just sugar 😂 Kaly is guilty

@orrrrre: Cocktails with raggedy names. No more.

@ravipahalwani9: “Same menu at every high end restaurant in Lagos

@edirin: DORIME AND THOSE SPARKLERS. Yes I’m shouting

@zaesudxsh: More creative mocktails!!

TOO MUCH ICE & SMALL GLASSES

By and large, you guys are also *done* with too many chunks of ice in your cocktail, DRY 🚫 ICE 🚫 and small glasses.

@Oyinkan_kvng: Reduce the ice please. Less ice and more drink ffs.

@TuslowT: Filling the glass with ice and just pouring small drink for cocktails

@_Zazo___: REDUCE THE F**KING ICE.

@olajay: Dry ice! We are tired

@chef_deeyah: Dry ice and freak shakes

@_MzJayde: Stop making ice n water with a little bit of igi ewedu

@noirblvck_: I don't want to see unblended ice in my frozen cocktails anymore.

@TheLekan: Cocktails with over 50% ice

@modupeaina09: 7k cocktails in small glasses filled with ice

OH, AND THIS! 🤦🏾‍♂️
