5 Essential Glassware You Need In Your Bar

In the last month or so, I’ve been thinking about getting a bar cart at my apartment and generally upping the quality of alcohol I drink. Time to drop the Gordons and Four Cousins so I can be a proper adult.

Anyway, in the process of setting up this fancy adult bar cart, I’ve had to think about getting proper cocktail glassware to complete the look. Doing all that googling has led me to writing this because I never really understood the difference between the glassware when you order a cocktail. Not in Lagos sha because Lagos bars just do anyhow

For anyone building out a bar at home, here are the five go-to pieces of glassware you need in your house.

Shot glasses

This one is a bit obvious. There’s no bar without shots and no shots without shot glasses. Ideally, your shot glasses should be a little over an ounce because you don’t want the shot spilling out.

Highball glasses

I only learnt about the highball from that Johnnie Walker campaign. Shout out to Lala. The highball is a tall, skinny glass and it’s perfect for G&Ts. Also perfect for the Johnnie Walker stuff. I mean, they did a whole campaign around it. You can also use the highball for tiki drinks.

Single rocks glasses

For anything you’re drinking neat or any spirit on the rocks, you need the single rocks glass. You can also use the single rocks glass for cocktails like the Negroni. Ideally, it should be between eight and ten ounces. Just about enough space for fancy ice.

Double rocks glasses

So, take the single rocks glasses and add another one to it. Ok, maybe not another one. A double rocks glasses is about two ounces bigger than the single rocks glass. The larger size makes it perfect for cocktails like the old fashioned or one of those julep things. This is the most versatile glass you’ll have in your bar.

Coupe glasses

The coupe glass is perfect for cocktails that are shaken or stirred before serving like a martini. Typical coupe glasses hold about six ounces and are built for “classy”. The stem on the coupe glass is there so you don’t heat your drink up with your hand as you sip.
