Every year, on March 25, International Waffle Day gives me the perfect excuse to indulge in my waffle cravings. This time, I decided to visit Waffle Monster on Ogudu Road, one of the restaurant havens on the Mainland. It’s just a few minutes walking distance from Oeuvre Bistro, which we reviewed earlier this month.

ICYMI: We did a whole roundup of places to get waffles on the Mainland last year.

As the name implies, Waffle Monster’s main thing is waffles, but they’re really just an all-around dessert joint, so they also serve gelato, cookies, cake, as well as, pastries. The space is quite small, but it makes sense because dessert joints don’t really need a lot of seating. Plus, they laid out the space well so that it’s small but not suffocating and has some cute interior decor. There was an old school music situation going on and because it was so intimate, I felt very free to get my groove on. All in all, I think it’d be a great place for an ice cream date.

My friend and I were feeling like waffles and ice cream, so I ordered their Cinnamon Bun Waffle Combo while he ordered their Lotus Cookie Waffle Combo. They were both ready within 20 minutes, but I was a bit surprised that we were required to pick it up from the counter. I'd expected table service for the waffles at least, but it wasn't a big deal. Both plates definitely looked very inviting, with the deep pockets in the waffles and generous crumb sprinkles and syrup drizzles, so we were more than ready to dig in.

My waffle was scrumptious, slightly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The cinnamon crumbs didn't really do much to enhance the flavour, but it wasn't a bad thing because it was yum all on its own. The vanilla ice cream was extremely creamy and rich and paired excellently with the waffles. I also tasted a slight banana flavour undertone, maybe from the vanilla syrup? Not sure.

The waffles that came with my friend's ice cream, on the other hand, had a more biscuity texture as it was crunchy almost all through. I'm not sure if the lack of consistency for both waffles was intentional, but it worked anyway because my friend preferred the crunchiness of his. In terms of taste, it was really yum too and the lotus cookies really made a difference in flavour enhancement.

Choco Crunch Gelato

Oreo Cookie Gelato

We both decided to treat ourselves to some more ice cream, so I had a scoop of their Choco Crunch flavour while he had a scoop of the Oreo Cookie flavour, after having a taste of nearly all their 10 flavours — the attendant even politely cut us off from taking more samples at some point, and understandably so. The Choco Crunch was really frozen so she put in work to dig that scoop out. I tucked in after it had melted a bit and it was so delectable. It was also really creamy and had a very rich chocolate flavour, plus the brownie crumbs just elevated it. The Oreo Cookie was basically the superb vanilla ice cream infused with Oreo crumbs, so its taste wasn’t surprising. At this point, we were joined by another friend who had a scoop of the Date ice cream. I thought it was a pretty interesting flavour, caramel-like, not overly sweet, but lush nonetheless.

Date Gelato

Butter cookies

For a takeaway treat, I decided to buy their butter cookies and turned out to be neither here nor there for me. But hey, it was just N600 for a pack so no qualms there. The cookies were vanilla flavoured, with a butterscotch undertone and they weren’t very crumbly. I felt like they could have used a lot more butter — seeing as they were ‘butter cookies’ afterall —to really enhance the flavour and texture.
