Eat Your Doughnut and Have It: Fit-Fam Friendly Doughnuts at Krispy Kreme

As soon as you get on a healthy kick, one of the first things you gain before the weight goes away is that gym guilt. You stray, even slightly, from your diet and you can’t stop beating yourself about it. There’s almost a whole subset of the fitness industry dedicated to it. Guilt-free cookies, anyone?

Look, you can’t “come and die”. If you’re craving that doughnut, then you should probably get one. You probably think that there’s nothing for the calorie-conscious individual, but there are actually some options that may fit into your diet if you know where to look. Your resolution to be healthy can happily coexist with your Krispy Kreme craving.

We got our hands on the nutrition information for items on the Krispy Kreme menu and after our review, here are some sub-300 calorie treats that won’t take you way out of your path.

Bonus point: all the above doughnuts are vegetarian, but not vegan, friendly.

Naturally, “Diet” and “Krispy Kreme” shouldn’t be in the same sentence, but here we are. No more feeling guilty when your coworker brings in a box of the Original Glazed or any of these Krispy Kreme treats. As long as you don’t overdo it, you won’t need to run an extra mile after work.

Krispy Kreme is Now Open at Ikeja City Mall

NOSA: After what might be the most extensive pre-launch campaign I've ever seen in Lagos, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in Lagos is officially open for business.

FOLLY: And with that, the free doughnut drops have come to an end. Krispy Kreme must have given out over 10,000 doughnuts throughout the month of February in Lagos - this is our unofficial estimate based on the number of "doughnut drops" they did across offices, cinemas, and events in Lagos.

NOSA: They did drops in traffic too!

NOSA: I mean, we saw it on instagram, but the brand confirmed it too. I don't think I've seen anything like this  at any other product launch in Lagos. It blew my mind a bit.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in Lagos is officially open for business. And by the looks of things, the grand opening on March 10 was a massive success with the first 20 customers already in line the night before.

FOLLY: To be fair, Nigerians love free stuff and there were prizes for the first 300 people and the first person won a year’s supply of doughnuts and coffee.

NOSA: They definitely get some props from me on how they "mainstreamed" what appears to be a niche product. Shouts to the marketing team.

Edmond Sassine, CEO of Quality Foods Africa, expressed his joy at seeing Lagosians turn up to welcome the first Krispy Kreme outlet in West Africa. According to him, 200 Nigerians have been employed so far with more to come as Krispy Kreme continues to grow in Nigeria.

NOSA: Word on the street is that there's an island store coming soon, on Bishop Aboyade Cole Street. Depending on how the first twos stores do, we'll probably get them all over the place like Dominos.

EDL Taste Test: Coco Ribbon vs. Bread Lounge

FOLLY: A little expensive cause 6 donuts N4000.

NOSA: It's definitely "priced as a gift"

FOLLY: Honorable mention to the packaging which is incredibly cute.

Vanilla Custard, Caramel, Raspberry Jam, Nutella

Vanilla Custard, Caramel, Raspberry Jam, Nutella

FOLLY: We ordered the box of six that comes in all their flavors namely:

  • Nutella
  • Vanilla Custard
  • Raspberry Jam
  • Salted Caramel
  • Strawberries and Cream
  • Plain

NOSA: It tastes like Mr Biggs donut. Folly won't agree.

FOLLY: Of the lot, my favorites were Strawberries & Cream and Caramel.

NOSA: Ok, maybe not exactly like Mr. Biggs, but it tastes like what Mr. Biggs donut wants to be. The raspberry jam one was fantastic, in particular.

FOLLY: Third place is probably a tie with vanilla custard and raspberry jam. The Nutella was forgettable, and the plain one was in solid last place.

FOLLY: It's what Mr. Biggs donut should aspire to be. A cake donut that is fluffy but not oily. It also didn't taste like bread, I feel it's important that I mention that because of this experience.

NOSA: I'd rather not talk about that experience.

FOLLY: Much cheaper than Coco Ribbon, at N300 a pop.

NOSA: Probably, for good reason.

FOLLY: The glazed donut was stale and the caramel was decent.

NOSA: Overall, it was incredibly disappointing. Let's not talk too much about it.

FOLLY: I still prefer Chocolate Royale.

NOSA: I'll be on topic, I prefer Coco Ribbon

Living The Sweet Life With Vanilla Bakehouse

NOSA: Last Independence Day, VanillaBakeHouse had this special holiday offer on their Instagram.

NOSA: Folly had been plotting on their donuts for a while now so I ordered them.

FOLLY: Their pink boxes and Instagram pictures fully had me washed.

NOSA: Since we didn't order off their regular menu, I did some sleuthing and got the full price list.

You're welcome.

FOLLY: It's not sleuthing because if you ask for it, they'll send it.

NOSA: Smh, this guy

NOSA: The donuts don’t really travel well, i.e. it doesn’t look as good as it does on their Instagram.

That said, it was passable.

FOLLY: I was very ehhh on the donuts. Too dense and a tad soggy (the cinnamon one).

NOSA: A bit like a Mr. Biggs donut with fancy icing. Definitely not like that other place that sells you a loaf of bread with icing on it.

FOLLY: The cupcakes and the cinnamon rolls, on the other hand, were awesome. Red Velvet, Vanilla, and Chocolate in that order. The chocolate cupcakes are in last place cause it wasn't a very rich type of chocolate cake.

NOSA:The real star for me were the cinnamon rolls. They needed some heating up, but my God, they were so delicious when warm. I’ve had a couple cinnamon rolls in Lagos and these are easily the best I’ve had here. For like 2 minutes, I swore I was in front of a Cinnabon.

FOLLY: The pictures definitely do not do the cinnamon rolls justice.

NOSA: The cupcakes too were a fave. I’ll put this up there with The Sweetspot. Honey’s Cupcakes appears to have packed up so VanillaBakeHouse is a worthy replacement for me.

FOLLY: I told you Honey's Cupcakes is on break, she'll come back soon.

NOSA: I'm a fan. Not so much of the donuts, but definitely of cinnamon rolls and the cupcakes. So yeah, VanillaBakeHouse is my new jam.

FOLLY: Their cupcakes are really good and at a slight discount to most Lagos bakers, so it's a yes from me.
