The Official IJGB* Guide to Lagos - 2018 Edition

*IJGB (I Just Got Back)

IJGB /eye-jay-gee-bee/

The official term used to denote a fresher in Lagos. One who has probably just hopped off a plane at Murtala Mohammed Airport and is ready to pioneer all possible rocks in Lagos.

First, this is the latest IJGB Guide we’ve done in a while. But it’s not my fault though, I was busy fighting my enemies in the office so I didn’t notice December had properly kicked in until my salary kicked in.

Second, your boy has been paid so Christmas has OFFICIALLY started.

Speaking of of getting paid, the dollar has been relatively stable this year. There was a little spike a couple weeks ago, but big daddy Meffy has been fighting the fire with all his might. Smart people say it’s one of those things where you transfer the effects to the long term in exchange for short term reward. Long story short, your dollar might not buy out the bar this year, but it probably will next year. So stay tuned for 2019 IJGB Guide lol.

Anyway, here’s a lowdown on what you’ve missed since your last visit:

Where to Eat

Z Kitchen

Yeah, some locals might say it’s overrated or it’s “not that good”, but those ones tend to forget they’re in Lagos and everything sucks. Look, you cannot, with good conscience, say there are 10 restaurants in Lagos better than Z Kitchen. And when you look at it like that, it’s easy to see why it’s the best new opening of the year. The seafood pasta is a scam, but they steaks are excellent and so is the cheesecake.

Honorable Mentions: Sushiholic, Maison Kayser, Burg

Where to Drink

Buzz Barr

Was Buzz Barr here last year? I’m a washed man so I really don’t know what the streets are saying these days. Christina knows though and she says the Pornstar Martini is a top 5 cocktail in Lagos:

The Porn Star, which is a passionfruit martini accompanied by a miniature glass of champagne, was O-U-T-S-T-A-N-D-I-N-G.
It was made from fresh passionfruit, vodka, passionfruit liqueur, vanilla liqueur, fresh lime juice and shooter champagne. This definitely makes top 5 Drink Lagos cocktails – it was neat, strong and sophisticated.

She knows what she’s saying so I’d trust her.

Honorable Mentions: The Grill by Delis, SABOR

Where to... Lagos?

Has anything really changed since last year? Oh, there’s no more Visionscape. Yeah, that’s a big change.  Anyway, here’s a calendar full things I’d do if I was still jumping the fence at Likwid.

The festive season is back and it's only right our IJGB Guide is back as well. Last year, we said the president was trying to kill us. This year, it's been a lot better. He's been on vacation for the most part. He might as well use this guide too. The naira is relatively stable so you're not going to get as much rocks for your dollar as you did last year.

While you were away, Lagos changed as expected. We got a couple new openings and some unfortunate closings.  Here's the lowdown on what you've missed:

Where to Eat

Backyard

We got a couple decent restaurant openings this year and the pick of the lot has to be Backyard. Backyard serves the closest thing you'll get to a Philly Cheesesteak in Lagos in their super popular Steak Sandwich.

I absolutely loved the Backyard. I can’t wait to go back and literally eat our way through their entire menu.

The Steak Sandwich

The Steak Sandwich

it's probably the most ordered thing on the menu and apparently, they run out sometimes. If they do, get the Suya Chicken as your back up.

South

South is another new one that's popped up this year. The menu is a bit limited and going by the comments in our review, it can be hit or miss. We really liked it, however. Our favorite thing on it was the The French.

The French

The French

You can make a very solid case for The French being the best burger in Lagos. A lot of people might argue and suggest another, but 9 out of 10 times, they'd be lying.

Six Thirty

Six Thirty is a new "underground" supper club that has popped in the last month. Secret location, secret menu, secret everything. If you're looking for a different vibe to dining in Lagos, this might be your thing.

You can sign up HERE.

Where to Drink

This section feels like cheating because haven't been any real NEW spots in Lagos to drink at. There are a couple new coffee shops and a new wine bar (on Abimbole Awoniyi, VI), but there nothing real significant.

Oh, Smoothie Express has a physical location now.

355

Like I said about cheating, 355 is back in time for Christmas. "Back" because they've lits been gone since last Christmas.

Eko Cocktail Club

Eko_Cocktail_Club_Logo_FINAL_vdzzbv.png

Eko Cocktail Club is like a supper club, but for drinking. It's Lagos take on London Cocktail Club and it's launching just in time for Christmas.

If it your thing, sign up HERE.

Where to... Lagos?

This year, we've had our favorite social prefect, Ndali, put together a list of things you should be getting up to this Christmas.

Another Christmas, eh? You IJGBs are back in time with your FX stimulus package. Since you've been away, our President has tried to kill us. I can't even laugh at you guys when you ask for the MTN recharge code again. Lagos has done a proper number on us.

Oh well, while you were away, Lagos changed. Here's the lowdown on what's popping.

Where to Eat

Craft Gourmet

Craft Gourmet is the new IT restaurant right now. Remember RSVP when they opened? Yeah, that's Craft now. Sunday brunch at Craft Gourmet is the new Southern Sun Sundays (Southern Sun prices are too much abeg). They have the perfect lighting for all your Instagram and Snapchat tensioning.

BL Restaurant

BL Restaurant has the worst restaurant name in Lagos. They also have the best hummus in Lagos and a top 5 pizza so it all evens out. Oh, the ribs at BL are to die for.

Where to Drink

Zenbah

Cocktail bars have never been a thing in Lagos, have they? Honestly can't remember. But then again, I only 3/4 years of proper Lagos experience. Either way, Zenbah should probably be your pregame move if you have no hands at SIP. You know you IJGBs like speaking english when they bounce you.

My Coffee

Lagos got ANOTHER coffee shop. It's significantly more expensive, but My Coffee has better "food" options.

The 5 Coolest Restaurant Spaces in Lagos

FOLLY: Eat.Drink.Lagos is one in a couple of weeks. I’m just going to come right out and say it because I’m pretty stoked about it. So why is this important? We don’t have a Lunch Club planned for October because we’re having a “birthday party” that you’re obviously all invited to. I’m obsessed with planning, so I’ve planned and re-planned this in my head. I’ve already designed the flyer. I've also drafted the emails and tweets – in my head because as I try to carry Nosa along I bore him with the details and excitement sometimes. I’ve not ordered the cake yet though, next week for sure.

NOSA: I'm not even sure if you're doing the most or I'm being lazy about it.

FOLLY: That said, Monday is back again with the less than pretty post-weekend traffic. It’s so easy to get into the I hate Monday state of mind, that’s why I think everyone should have a Monday ritual that served to counteract all the things about Mondays that we’ve come to despise. Basically, if you’re going to choose any day of the week to treat yourself do it on a Monday.

NOSA: Small problem. Like 80% of Lagos restaurants refuse to open on Mondays.

FOLLY: So in a way that’s the point of this list the coolest spaces in Lagos that would help remind you why it’s all worth it on a Monday in the chilliest way possible.

Rue 80 @ Maison Fahrenheit

Why?

Best rooftop in Lagos.

Hands down.

You get to see a aerial view of Adetokunbo Ademola, Eko Atlantic and the sunset. The view is particularly perfect during rush hour because you can watch everyone struggle in traffic as you enjoy your expensive cocktail. Your wallet might be crying, but you're not like those people sweating in Eko Hotel traffic

Terrace Bar @ Radisson Blu

Why?

They've just reopened and are pulling out all the stops and are bringing their A Game to everything. Brunch. Champions League nights. Everything.

Image: Trip Advisor

It's one of better views of the Lagoon in Lagos. Think Churrasco but cleaner and more expensive

5 Cowries @ Oriental Hotel

Why?

5 Cowries has impressive real estate and it's not scattershot like the Intercontinental rooftop. There's also a random pool but not like you're planning on getting into it.

The breeze from the Lagoon is particularly nice, also it’s elevated so there’s no smell. Sure it's a little tricky getting into The Oriental, but if you're heading towards Lekki/Ajah it's the perfect spot to wait out the traffic.

Churrasco

Why?

God knows we hate praising Churrasco for anything, but there was a reason it was the IT spot for the longest. Sure, the food is scraps and the waiters overcharge every once in a while. But you can never deny that space. We went to Bay Lounge on a hot Sunday afternoon and it definitely made us appreciate Churrasco a lot more

The water is low-key filthy at the corner closest to the churrascaria so avoid that spot like a plague.

Crossroads

Why?

"Swanky" feels like one of those overused, and now empty, words that journalists/bloggers always use. It's right up there with "dapper". A shame because "swanky" is the perfect word to describe Crossroads. It oozes such an effortless cool. Like, James Bond could walk in here and order a martini or whatever it is that he drinks.

thumb_IMG_3808_1024.jpg

You can chat with the bartenders and watch them make your drinks by the paperclip oval bar if that's your style. Fantastic for people watching and it doesn't hurt that the food is actually really good.
